On Friday 13th May, 45 students, accompanied by Mrs Murphy, Mrs Lowry, Mrs King, Mrs Beaty and Mrs Greenhalgh, travelled to Barton Hall, Torquay for a weekend of netball and fun.
After our usual visit to the beach for a paddle and picnic, we arrived at the centre and the girls took part in some sports/games based team activities. PGL activities including zipwire, aeroball, climbing, abseiling, swimming and quad biking were also on offer throughout the weekend.
The netball competitions began on Saturday and continued into Sunday. They were run by All England netball and were of a very high standard, with teams competing from all over the country. Our Year 7 ‘B’ team played well and improved as the weekend progressed. Our Year 7 ‘A’ team played exceptionally well, reaching the semi-finals, where they lost to the eventual winners (3rd out of 16 teams)! Our Year 8 team had a slow start on Saturday, but played really well and with great determination, securing 2 great wins on Sunday, to finish 7th. Our Year 9 team played very well against tough opposition from some year 10 teams, to narrowly miss reaching the semi-finals by 1 point! (Finished 5th) Our Year 10” Dream team” played outstandingly well in all of their matches to reach the final, where they played Great Torrington Community College and unfortunately lost, so finishing 2nd – disappointing for you, I know, but still really proud of each one of you. This team were a great inspiration to our younger girls and were extremely helpful during the weekend. A special mention must also go to Harriet Draper (Yr10), who was selected by the officials and umpires as the best Yr9/10 player of the tournament.
Thank you girls and well done to all of you. You were a great credit to St. Martin’s.
