Direct InstructionDirect Instruction was developed as a very efficient and effective way to enable children to learn, particularly to develop pupil literacy and numeracy.
DI is a teacher-led instructional method to rapidly improve pupil performance. Lessons are highly scripted and the teacher carefully and clearly guides pupils in their learning. The programme is characterised by pupils learning from examples and grasping the concept before they move on. Pupils practice continually and for extended periods until they have mastered the learning. Sequences of content are carefully developed to ensure learning is efficient and effective. There is high paced questioning, continuous feedback and rapid correction of misconception. For a more detailed explanation click here. |
Our Experience |
We felt that conventially in schools, lower ability pupils are given a less ambitious curriculum and work at a slower pace to the rest of their peers. Direct Instruction was introduced to help pupils learn at a faster rate than other pupils in order for them to catch up. Mrs Sanders is our in-house expert who has pioneered the approach at Saint Martin's. Since its introduction, the programme has had a massive impact on the literacy and numeracy of our pupils on the programme. We use the programme published by McGraw-Hill.

What we can offer |
Direct Instruction is a very unconventional way of teaching. The programme is highly scripted and one of the reasons, we believe, why it has not gained traction despite its effectiveness, is the challenge any teacher would face in implementing it. The success of the programme has made us quite evangelical about DI and we are happy to help any schools who might seek advice. In addition, we also offer a more formal training programme for interested teachers. For more details or costs feel free to contaact the school.
