Library
Reading for pleasure is a big part of school life here at Saint Martin’s. Students are only considered to be ‘prepared’ for any lesson if they have a reading book in their bag. There is a minimum requirement of reading 20 minutes each day as part of their homework. Plus, they are given one whole lesson each week to read whatever they like.
We believe strongly that reading for pleasure plays a key role in raising attainment and supports a wide range of pupils’ academic, personal, social and emotional learning outcomes. Our Library collection provides resources to inspire our students to pursue knowledge, increase understanding, and discover enjoyment through good quality fiction and non-fiction.
Students are welcome in the library anytime from 8:30am to 5:00pm. There are various places to sit quietly and read or study. There are also 9 computers to use for homework, MyMaths practice, or other assigned school projects. A colour printer is available; however, for better quality, we recommend planning ahead and printing at any of the local public libraries where you receive 5 pages of FREE homework printing each day.
Library Information
Opening Times: Monday to Friday 8:30am—5:00pm
Loan Limits: Each student may borrow up to 3 books for a period of 3 weeks.
Borrowing / Returning / Renewing Books: Book should always be brought to the Help Desk so that they can be scanned through the computerised library management system.
Important: You are responsible!
When a student borrows a book, the date due is stamped on the slip inside the front cover. As a curtesy, reports are run regularly and given to form to tutors to remind students if a book is overdue. Sometimes email messages will be sent through to parents. However, if these messages do not get through for whatever reason, the student is still responsible because they can always look inside the book to see the date it is due back.
Overdue charges: There is a charge of 5p each day a book is late.
30 Day Limit: If a book is 30 days late, there is an automatic £5 penalty charge. (The student will not be charged an additional cost for a lost book at this point unless that cost exceeds £5.) The student will receive 1 behaviour point each day until this is sorted.
Lost/Damaged books: Please talk to Mrs Frith as soon as possible to arrange to pay for a replacement.
NOTE: All money collected will go towards buying new books for the library.
