Music

During Key Stage 3 music lessons students learn performance, composition and appraisal skills through a variety of practical and written exercises. The course has been structured to give students the highest level of musical vocabulary to discuss a breadth of extracts from Bach to Zimmer. Students are taught practically and learn how to use the correct performance techniques to play the keyboard and guitar. In addition to this there are many singing opportunities built into the curriculum as well as a turntablism unit which incorporates challenging rhythmic control using a modern instrument.

At Key Stage 4 the curriculum continues to build upon the high level of musical vocabulary and practical discipline obtained over Years 7 and 8. In addition to rehearsing and delivering high-quality solo and ensemble performances, students are taught advanced compositional techniques to make their own exciting and original music. Students study the Baroque, Classical and Romantic musical eras in depth as well as the changing trends and features of popular music from the 50s onwards. World music such as Bhangra, Samba, Indian Classical and Greek Music are covered in practical and knowledge-rich lessons and the music of film and video games is analysed in detail.

Extra-curricular opportunities include choir, ukulele club, participation in the school production, liturgy band (consisting of instrumentalists and vocalists) and several other small ensembles that meet in the music department to practice and rehearse together.
